US Built type TP
These wagons were built in large numbers in the United States for transportation service in Europe during, and after, the First world war. They were shipped across the Atlantic as kits of parts. Many were assembled by engineering troops in Saint Nazaire and La Rochelle. After the Armistice, the assembly was transferred to Aytré and assembled by civilian workers.The French Ministry of public works (ministère des travaux publics - TP) purchased all wagons left on French soil plus wagons already under construction in the US. These wagons were revolutionary with a much higher capacity than what was currently in use at the time.
In 1921, the final distribution was as follows:
1,702 cars to the Est
11,826 to the Nord
7,598 to the ETAT
4,000 to the PO
2,500 to the Midi
6,300 to the PLM
In addition to these figures, there are 1,700 wagons (flats and closed-gate drop-off) ordered directly by the ETAT from the Middletown car Co in 1916. These cars do not appear in the "TP" Park, but are very close to them.
Many different versions of the TP cars were manufactured using many standard parts:
13,727 two-and four-door covered wagons.
1,449 refrigerated or isothermal closed wagons;
8,923 Gondola wagons;
11,276 Flat wagons with low sides;
4256 Flat wagons with or without stakes.
These cars have an identical chassis length of 36 ' 2 3/4 ".
There were also the following wagons based on the 31 ' 6 "chassis:
1,749 tank cars ,
552 ballast cars,
50 tipping cars,
150 2-axle tipping cars,
240 40-tonne flat cars for tank transport,
2 cars reinforced for 100 tonnes.
5 crane support cars.
REE do their research and all liveries are produced from period photographs and SNCF records.
