Prototype:
Nord Pacific ÉTAT 231

La Chapelle Depot Paris Nord

No. 3.1150.  Tender number 35.143

3.1150 was the only État Pacific on the Nord and it seems to have been acquired after an unusual set of circumstances.

At the start of the First World war the first of the 283 Etat pacifics were under construction. 231.501 to 231.550 had been ordered from Fives Lille.  When the Germans invaded 231.502 was being completed as was take to a German depot near Duisberg to provide a stationary boiler. Eventually the loco was returned to France and the Nord Railway Company acquired it in 1920.

Nicknamed 'The Breton' 3.1150 became the first European locomotive fitted with a mechanical stoker.

Despite the complexity of servicing and maintaining a unique locomotive, the Nord must have appreciated 3.1150 as it ran in the region until 1947 when the SNCF (as 2.231 B 1) finally reunited it with other members of the class on the Ouest region at Sotteville depot.
