The organisations who attempt to standardise our World
Standardisation is a great advantage to the railway modeler - It means that equipment, from a variety of companies will work together.There are a couple of organisations that we can thank for this
NMRA - National Model Railroad Association USA
MOROP - The technical commision of MOROP is entrusted with developing the European standards for model railways (NEM - Normes Européennes du modélisme ferroviaire)
Although their work is not without controversy, we have much to be grateful for. Before these organisations existed we were tied to just one manufacturer if we wanted a layout to work!
Before standards were set manufacturers were free to use any scale, track gauge, power supply, coupling system, wheel dimensions...
As someone who was introduced to the hobby in the late 70's and 80's I can fully understand the disappointment that is experienced when a new item fails to work with your existing stock. (or at all!)
These organisations have done great work standardising DCC digital - Our experience is with European and British DCC and we benefit greatly from the work that has been done. DCC locomotives from Britain and Europe all work together incredibly well.
When it comes to DCC accessories the picture is more complicated. We have to remember that Manufacturers must be free to compete - a rigid standard applied to all Manufacturers for control systems and accessories would result in every product being identical. Thankfully, manufacturers are able to innovate so this results in superbly designed systems which can really bring a railway to life. A simple piece of advice is to research the products first before buying - we can show you the DCC systems and I have many films demonstrating their capability as well as products that we know to be compatible.

RailCommunity - the new kid on the block.
This is a group of European DCC Manufacturers who have come together to better integrate DCC by building on the work of the NMRA and MOROP.
