Locomotive decoder interfaces

Over the years decoder sockets (Interface) have evolved.

At the start manufacturers wanted a simple way to connect a decoder to a locomotive with simple functions - motor and maybe directional lights.

Models can now have many electrical functions - Nation specific loco lights, Cab lights, Dashboard lights, engine room lights, smoke generators, speakers, timing sensors, curve sensors, fan motors and servo motors.  Each of these need independent connections to the decoder to allow them to be individually controlled.  This has resulted in more decoder interfaces being developed.

The following are the main standard sockets that are commonly used - The governing standard then a description:

NEM651  - 6-pin

NEM652 - 8-pin

NEM658 (RCN122) - PluX12 / PluX16 / PluX22

NEM660 (RCN121) - 21MTC

NEM662 (RCN118) - Next18

RCN114 - 14MTC.  This is a 14 pin socket primarily used by Minitrix

RCD124 - E24 Decoder socket

RCD135 - FX35 Decoder socket

NEM standards are agreed within Morop

RCN and RCD standards are agreed by RailCommunity and often then adopted by Morop
