Lenz O Br86

776 Br86 2-8-2 tank locomotives were delivered between 1928 and 1943.  385 were passed to the Deusche Bundesbahn and 175 to the DR with others being dispersed throughout Europe and 20 destroyed during the war.

As part of the German standard locomotive fleet the shared common parts with the Br64 and Br24 designs making repair and servicing much easier for depots. Starting in 1942 the design was gradually simplified for Wartime construction. These were designated as Übergangskriegslokomotive or Br86 ÜK. Fewer non-ferrous metals were used then pre-heaters and feed pumps were omitted then more and more austere features such as the front cabside window was omitted leaving a flat plate (like the Br42 and Br52 kreigsloks) and the pony wheels were plain discs instead of spoked wheels.  During 1942 some factories were completing earlier orders so you see a mixture of Standard Br86 and Br86 ÜK in the loco numbering scheme for the later numbered locos. Judging by later photos the DB appears to have upgraded the majority of Br86 ÜK locomotives to the Br86 original design.
