Lenz O Br01 Steam Locomotive
The Br01 was the first Standardised Pacific design for the German state railways. Standardisation meant that all depots could perform repairs quickly using spare parts that could be held in stock rather than having to be individually made to fit.
231 Locomotives were built between 1926 and 1938. 10 additional locomotives were converted from the 4 cylinder Br02 machines that were constructed for comparison trials - the 2-cylinder Br01 won out on serviceability even though the Br02 was more powerful and efficient.
Initial production had to be delayed as routes were upgraded to accommodate the 20t axle load and turntables were constructed that were long enough to turn the locomotives.
Some routes couldn't be upgraded leading to the design of the lightweight Br03 with an 18t axle load. In 1938 the Br01.10 class were built with 3 cylinders for high speed running.
The locos were built with the large Wagner smoke deflectors. During the 1950s these were gradually replaced by the smaller Witte smoke deflectors. The front bogie wheels were increased in size to 1,000mm so that the top speed could be increased to 130km/h from 120km/h. Construction started in 1925 and the last loco retired in 1982.
The DB ran the class until 1973. The DR kept them going well into the 1980s.
