The E44 were designed as multipurpose locomotives for light, fast passenger and goods trains. Axle mounted motors dispensed with the need to link drive wheels together,  with fewer moving parts the E44 were robust in service and had lower maintenance costs. With deliveries starting in the 1930s, the E44 lasted well into the 1980s.

From the mid 1960s the chassis was painted red - This was a pragmatic decision as dirt on the red paint would show cracks  - the locomotive fleet had heavy wear and many E44 had been unsuccessfully re-gauged to the Russian 1524mm track and returned to 1435mm Standard gauge.

The model - Full DCC Digital function - Running Sounds, Automatic uncoupling, Direction dependant headlights, pantographes can be raised and lowered on command, Driver changes with direction of travel, Cab light, USP energy storage and RailCom.
