The E41 were designed as multipurpose locomotives for light, fast passenger and goods trains. Thanks to the low axle load the E41 could be used branch lines. Between 1956 and 1971 a total of 451 units were built. All E 41 are equipped for push-pull services and have Bryant and Indusi brake systems.  The nickname given to these locomotives was Knallfrosch (Firecracker)
