Rail transport was essential for Armies whose heavy equipment was never intended for long overland runs - even without wear and tear, the fuel usage would be colossal. The Ssy45 were uprated to carry vehicles up to 55 tons. Specialist wagons built in the 1940's still in use in the 1990's.

The M88 is an American built specialist recovery vehicle used by the German army.  They are now manufacturered by BAE Systems.
